Image Talk: Important or not?

“Image talk” to cultivate self-affirmative mind by positive prompt words. I would like to explain how image talk helps the child in school especially at home.

What is “Image Talk”?

Image talk is one of the best way to encourage students.

Image training to students is thought to be useful to enhance their concentration ability by paying attention and leaving a strong impression of the image used.

Teachers talk first to their students to motivate and entertain them. It helps students to think ideas, explain and learn from others. It also helps to enhance their right brain through imagination and creativity. But aside from that, it also helps students to believe themselves and have courage to do things on their own. And here are some examples of image talk:

“Let’s do our best!” “You can do it!” “Do not give up!” “what is your target today?” “Good! keep it up” and “What did you do today in your school?”

In Image talk, you can talk about anything that will motivate them before the class starts and finishing the lesson by praising them for a job well done or other things which can be related to the next session.

Thus, the result is quite different between studying without thinking and studying with motivation.

Points of Image Talk

Image talking is when you speak with the child to make it  easier to imagine their target.

When you say “You should study hard!” It makes the child feel pressure, especially when the child is about to take an exam. It is more motivating to them when you say, “Please study hard and I will buy a bicycle if you pass the exam.” Be more conscious of your words in giving image talk to kids.  Use polite words so kids will not get hurt.

If you say “If you pass the exam you will receive a certificate”, the child imagines that she got a certificate. From a usual point of view, it may be good to talk while thinking that “If I say this, the child will be motivated, if I’m saying this, the child will be delighted and will do his/her best.”

And when you praise a child, do not forget to hug them and say “I love you”. Such a reaction is more than anything and the child realizes that his or her hard work is appreciated. It makes the child gains more courage to do his or her best next time.

The points of image talk are;

  1. To motivate the students
  2. To get students attention
  3. Let them think what they did that day

Summary

Image talk is most important for us and the students. It helps to students to be motivated and to think about their actions first. It can be also used at home, parent’s support is one of the best encouragement a child can get.

Here are some examples of image talk;

At school or in IPPO:

  • “What did you do today?”
  • “You’re halfway already! Keep it up!!”
  • “You can do it!”
  • “If you pass, you can proceed to next grade and you can get a certificate”
  • “Abacus is cool, I want to do it”

At home:

  • “I will buy your favorite ice cream when you pass.”
  • “I know you can do it”
  • “I’m so proud of you!”
  • “I love you!”

Did you do these at home? If not, you can start now and let your child feel your love and support.
